UserNotes Functionality For Tracking Changes to System Configuration

Introduction – Visualization Modelling and Forecasting using VisualizeIT can be performed using a combination of the Analytical, Statistical or Simulation modelling techniques provided. One of the big challenges with modelling system behaviour for purposes of forecasting is tracking changes to key system parameters i.e. software configuration, hardware configuration or software/hardware upgrades of any kind. Changes in key system parameters could impact how you choose to use data you’ve collected from the past e.g. when a software release or a hardware upgrade is performed on a given system, this changes the behaviour of the system and the system is said to now have a new performance baseline. In such a situation one should not use data collected from before the system/configuration change for purposes of modelling system behaviour and forecasting system performance. You are forced to possibly update your workload models and collect new performance data before you perform any modelling and forecasting tasks.

What Capability Does UserNotes Provide – As we’ve seen, it is very important to track changes to system configuration i.e. hardware or software. Tracking changes to system configuration allows you to determine if there will be an impact to the modelling and forecasting being performed. The UserNotes functionality within VisualizeIT give you the capability to create notes to yourself for key system configuration i.e. hardware or software changes that have occurred.

UserNotes allows you to tag these changes as having or not having a potential impact to the modelling and forecasting outcome. When performing Time Series Exploratory Data Analysis, Time Series Decomposition, Time Series Forecasting or Time Series Regression for a given set of Application/Data Dimensions, any relevant UserNotes for those Application/Data Dimensions will show up on the page. It’s up to the user to determine the impact of the relevant system changes and their impact on the modelling and visualization output.

The UserNotes functionality within VisualizeIT can be broadly broken down into two separate areas –

  • Create UserNotes
  • Edit or Delete UserNotes

The interface for UserNotes is quite intuitive and allows for quick creation of UserNotes for any given combination of Application/Data Dimension. Keep in mind, the main purpose of UserNotes is to allow the user to capture changes in system configuration and avoid a situation where modelling is performance across a time period where the system baseline has changed.

Conclusion –   UserNotes is part of the Data Management capability within VisualizeIT and is designed with the functionality to provide the user the capability to track changes to key system configuration metrics i.e. hardware or software changes for a given Application/Data Dimension. These changes will then show up on the relevant statistical models highlighting the need for caution when performing modelling or forecasting across a period during which system configuration has changed.

Modelling Solution: VisualizeIT offers access to a bunch of Analytical Models, Statistical Models and Simulation Mcropped-visualize_it_logo__transparent_090415.pngodels for purposes of Visualization, Modelling & Forecasting. Access to all the Analytical (Mathematical) models is free. We recommend you try out the Analytical models at VisualizeIT which are free to use and drop us a note with your suggestions, input and comments. You can access the VisualizeIT website here and the VisualizeIT modelling solution here –VisualizeIT.
